Beowulf v.s Roland

Beowulf vs. Roland
Beowulf, a real hero with great valor and extraordinary strength living in the earlier and uncivilized world, and Roland, the protagonist of The Song of Roland and the embodiment of heroic spirit of the early French society, are comparable in a number of ways.
First of all, form the perspective of social background, the story of Beowulf is based on the life experience of the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples and was presumably composed around 9th century. On the other hand, The Song of Roland is developed from a historical incident in the career of Charlemagne and composed about three centuries later than Beowulf.
In Beowulf¡¦s time, Christianity and God was yet unknown to the contemporary people. Therefore, the figures appear in Beowulf, including Beowulf himself, are all pagans and worship their pagan gods.
