Becoming an Effective Helper The helping model is a collective process of steps to successfully complete the solving of a problem. The three stages of the helping model are as follows. 1. What’s going on? 2. What solutions make sense for me? 3. How do I get what I need or want? My understanding of the first stage entails getting the client to tell their story or problem and after listening to the problem, one should help the client to see a number of options that they did not see before the meeting started. The helper should help the client to decipher through the problems and choose which problem will be the most beneficial to work on first. The next stage is to help the client to envision a brighter future. Now they can come up with new ideas that did not seem reachable before. Previous options should be transformed into attainable ambitions. The goal then allows the client to buckle down and commit to changing the problem.
