Avon-Future of Cosmetics Brief Background of Avon Avon, today known as ‘The Company for Women,’ initially started out as the ‘California Perfume Company’ when the founder, Mr. David McConnell, a New Yorker, observed that people were purchasing his books because of the premium, a rose oil perfume, he offered with each purchase. In 1886, in honor of his favorite playwright, William Shakespeare, Stratford on Avon, he renamed the company as Avon. During the same year, he employed a housewife named Mrs. P. F. E Albee, from Winchester New Hampshire to perform door - to – door selling of his perfume; thus, innovating the company’s direct selling method. Surprisingly, women have been selling Avon since 1886, that is, 36 years before women gained the right to vote.
