Avenues and Alleyways

Formed in 1998, Rancid has been at the forefront of modern protest song writing and have developed a reputation as a well-known band. During the year 2000 they wrote Avenues and Alleyways, a lyric which argues that our society is changing rapidly with reference to racial views and the generation gap and the need to change to suit the new society or be left behind. I decided to use this lyric because of its appealing rhyming scheme that involves emotion as I have discussed further on.

The themes discussed are not dissimilar to many of the average protest poems yet are reviewed in a different manner to norm of calm and sorrowful. Written in second person, it defines our changing society though the use of strong and powerful statements such as ‘the problem is you’ and ‘Change is comin’ now there’s nothing you can do,’ which allowed me to think about my contribution to our community and how much we’ve developed.
