This article develops a descriptive model of best practices in activity-based management (ABM). The model is based on data colected from surveys and field visits. • The model ilustrates how success with ABM is influenced by a firms internal and external environment, with the external environment including competi- tors, customers, and suppliers. • In the internal environment, management re q u i rements and directions afect the ABM methodology, as wel as the technology that supports the ABM system. • The internal environment also afects the selection of ABM applications, the level of integration with other initiatives, the extent of embracement by man- agement, and ultimately the success of ABM.
