In case you missed Dave and Diane and Katie and the Time excerpt and CNN and so on, here are the headlines: Jessica Lynch did not "fight to the death," blasting away at Iraqi hordes; did not suffer bullet and knife wounds; was not slapped, much less tortured, by her captors; was not rescued in a blazing gun battle by U.S. commandos; and was not, as she impishly volunteered in a parade of TV appearances pegged on a book one can only hope spells an end to this whole unsavory affair, "a hero."
"I didn't kill nobody," the simple, humble 20-year-old says to author Rick Bragg in one of the few unembroidered lines in this treacly embarrassment. "We left a lot of men behind. . . . I'm just a survivor. When I think about it, it keeps me awake at night."
