Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Chavez was born February 1896 in Arequipa, Peru, a mountain city about 500 miles southeast of Lima. His father Max, was a successful photographer, with studios in Arequipa and La Paz, Bolivia, and the young Alberto spent countless hours watching him work.
