Currently, the United States (U.S.) is involved in several arms control agreements with foreign nations both friend and foe. The most prominent of these agreements are the arms control treaties that received ratification by the U.S. Senate and are presently in force. The treaties are a legal commitment recognized by the United Nations that seek to reduce and limit the amount of strategic and tactical arms the U.S. and other nations possess, transfer, manufacture and forward deploy. To manage the U.S. Treaty Program, the U.S. created the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and charged it with managing in force treaties through inspection and verification. DTRA safeguards America's interests from weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high explosives) by controlling and reducing the threat and providing quality tools and services for the warfighter.
