Are criminals born bad or made bad? This question has risen steadily over the past sixty years. Many psychologists, sociologists and criminologists have tried to establish the nature of criminality. The born or made argument, known as the “nature versus nurture” debate, asks whether the criminal mind is due to genetic factors, and therefore unavoidable, or whether it is the product of socialisation, environmental surroundings or other external factors.
On the nature side of this study I will look at biological perspectives such as personality (Eysenck 1967), constitutional theories (Sheldon et al 1949), (Lombrosso 1870) and genetics. Another perspective I will look at is the neurological perspective but first I will look at the psychoanalytical theory (Freud).
