To understand Christianity, it is necessary to understand who Paul was and what his career on earth consisted of. Aside from Jesus Christ, Paul has been the most important figure in the history of religion, and has influenced every believer to this day. His career was more a calling, or was considered to be more of a life style because it was his passion and it was what he loved doing.
Born to Jewish parents in Tarsus (now in Turkey), Paul was originally named after the ancient Hebrew king Saul. On the eighth day after his birth he was circumcised, as arranged by the Jewish Law; and was in all respects raised in agreement with the Pharisaic understanding of the Law. As a young Jew of the Diaspora (the destruction of Jews into the Greco-Roman world), Saul took as his everyday name the Latin Paul, a name with a sound similar to that of his Hebrew birth name.
