Jon Krakauer in this passage displays a tone of his father in the days of his child hood, where his father was a stern motivator, pressuring yet caring, it is these traits that carried over into his adult life. Krakauer's father was a man that expected the most of his children and thus expected them to achieve thus. It was the father motivation that drove Jon and his other sibling to be over achievers growing up yet there was a side to the pressuring father, the side that cared about his children. Thus growing up Jon would make some decision that would be fueled by his sense of over achieving.
