Abstract

With society’s obsession with thinness, we can see why so many young adults have anorexia. Anorexia is an eating disorder where they refuse to eat or to retain any food or suffers a prolonged and severe reduction in appetite. Anorexia comes in two types, and they include the restricting type and the binge-eating-purging type. There are several different etiologies that try to explain the causes behind this disorder. You have to look at the biological aspect, the psychological aspects, like gender cultural differences, and environmental stresses, the cognitive-behavioral aspect and of course the family aspect. One early psychodynamic theory proposed it was a defense against fears or oral impregnation. Whichever aspect you look at, an adolescent with anorexia needs treatment.
