Andersonville

ANDERSONVILLE


The Civil War was one of the most significant aspects of U.S. History. Many men fought within each battle of the Civil War; thus many men were captured and became prisoners of war. One of the more horrific prisoner’s camp was the one located in Georgia, in Sumter County, called Andersonville. The prison camp of Andersonville was overcrowded, had a shortage of food supplies, terrible sleeping conditions and many health issues, thus making Andersonville an atrocious living hell.
Andersonville was constructed in December of 1863, and officially named, “Camp Sumter.” The prison camp was located just south of Macon and north of Americaus, Georgia. Andersonville was an isolated site that contained the rail connections necessary for moving prisoners and supplies and, the camp was built largely to help relieve the situation of Belle Isle and Libby prisons in Richmond.
