"When The Lottery was published in 1948 issue of the New Yorker it recieved a response, that no New Yorker story had ever recieved." -Lenemaja Friedman- Does this mean that Shirley Jackson wrote the kind of short story that people were keen on reading, or she just accidentaly succeeded in stiring up emotions with her unique work? In this essay I am going to approach to the reasons for the intense public attention that carried along so many people at that time.
At that time, militant suffragettes had just disappeared from the streets of America, and the rights of women were constantly modulated. Casting Mrs. Hutchinson for the scapegoat part, may had collided with the interests of all emancipated femes in the US. Considering the work in this angle makes the strong impression, that some responses to the Lottery were from these fierce women of equality to express their conceited indignation.
