American Pie

American Pie based on the name of the plane (a Beechcraft Bonanza) in which Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens were killed. It is said that the song is a tribute to Buddy Holly and commentary on how rock and roll has changed in the years since his death.
The line that says “A long, long time ago...” refers to how “American Pie" reached #1 in 1972 but, Buddy Holly, died in 1959.
“But something touched me deep inside, The day the music died.” talks about how the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly also tragically took the lives of Richie Valens and The Big Bopper .Since all three were so prominent at the time, February 3, 1959, became known as "The Day The Music...
