A Separate Peace: A character Analysis Essay

Imagine yourself in the early 1940's. You go to a private high school, and thoughts of war are being shoved into your head. Your best friend is the greatest athlete in school, possibly to ever live. Now, you are smart and just so-so at sports. In "A Separate Peace", by John Knowles, an adolescent boy named Gene is going through this exact experience. His own insecurities and jealousy spawn from his best friends, Phineas, charisma and other abilities.

One of Gene's insecurities is that he knows he's too passive. Examples of this are provided throughout the story.
