A Quest for Their True Identity

Youth is the period in a person’s life when s/he is building his/her identity and personality. During those years, many start to rebel against any form of authority especially parents; they want to feel different from those who have created, raised and always there to control them up to a certain point in life. Because they think that their parents are old-fashioned, they feel the need to distinguish themselves from them in order to seem more American. Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club tells the story of four young women, who have difficulties accepting their Chinese origins, going on a cultural journey where they discover their own culture and learn to appreciate it. Each of them goes on a quest to find their true identity through many life experiences and their mother’s teachings. At first, it seems that the American culture in which these young women have grown up is the dominant force in their lives. However by the end of the story the importance of their Chinese heritage ...
