A Battle With Mr. Covey The inner-strengths of a being, does not rise until the strangest situations unlock it. The power within is not released until it knows it suits the situation. In the story, “The Battle with Mr. Coveyâ€, a man by the name of Frederick, has his dignity and respect tested; the unlikeliest of terms brings him to express his inner-self. He begins to feel and intertwine with a being that is almost a whole new person within him. The release in his inner self-confidence and courage brings him to heights he would have never foreseen otherwise. The self-confidence that flourishes from within Frederick is blossomed through a simple materialistic item. Simple enough in appearance, the item was “…a certain root, which, if I would take some of it with me, carrying it always on my right side, would render it impossible for Mr. Covey, or any other white man, to whip me†(Douglass, 429).
