“The Loss of the Creature,”

Jorn Utzon was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1918. He studied at the

Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. After spending time studying he traveled through

Europe, United States, and Mexico. In 1950 when he returned home from traveling he

established his own practice in Copenhagen.

In 1955 the State Government of New South Wales launched a worldwide

contest for a design to suit the site of Bennelong Point. On January 26, 1957, which is

Australia Day, Jorn Utzon was announced winner. The completion date was announced

to be on Australia Day in 1963 and the cost to be 7 million dollars in Australian money.
