“The Framers of the Constitution of 1787 intended to create a Republic, not a Democracy.” Discuss

“The United States shall guarantee to every state in this Union a Republican form of Government.” (Article 4 section 4). This statement, taken from the constitution, helps to demonstrate the ideal of the initial statement made in the title. There is more than just this extract to support the claim made in the title, however. Only through looking back at the history of the conception of the constitution, right up to the final draft, and even before it can a proper conclusion be drawn.
Before doing this it is important to define the terms in the question, for in their definition conclusions can be drawn which can help lead to answers. The basic definition of democracy is “Rule by the demos”, which basically means rule by the people or mob. The definition of a republic is “a system of government that does not entail monarchy, or aristocratic or oligarchial rule” ; nowadays it is often any society that is non-monarchial and democratic.
