“Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota”

A number of poets seemingly try to intertwine their own writings with instances or happenings in their own lives. In the poem, “Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota”, James Wright, subconsciously creates a reflection of his life by generating images implying his unhappiness. These reflections eventually lead to the outcome of his life, which seems to be spent in thought rather than in action. The span of the poem occurs in a single day, and occurrences in this day are representations of Wright’s entire life. The transition from morning to night represents his life from beginning to end. He views his life through pictures, sitting back observing his surroundings and the lives of others around him. Finally, when the evening darkens, he comes to the realization that his life is over and he has nothing of great worth to show for it.
