Focus Question : “ Is the United Nations an effective forum for the promotion of the ideals of internationalism .”

The idea for the “ United Nations “ was formed after the collapse of the League of Nations during the first world war.

Soon after the League of Nations was abandoned due to the simple fact that it failed to prevent World War 2 from taking place.

In 1945 , representatives of 50 different nations met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the Untied Nations Charter. On the 26th June 1945 the charter was signed by all 50 countries.

30 years later membership had increased to 140 nations, all of which could attend the General Assembly. There was a special security council to deal with threats to peace , still consisting of 5 permanent members ( china , USA , USSR , France , UK ) and 10 temporary members.
