Beneath the façade of an innocent society, who are wrapped up in the selfish fulfillment of money and pleasure, is lurking a radial social or political message. Cabaret is fun, but it is anything but foolish. It is no happily-ever-after crowd-pleaser. It makes us think, and urges us to confront quite serious issues.

Offstage, Sally tries to continue the glitzy, everything is wonderful act. Sporting green fingernails, delighting in her “divine decadence”, cheerfully flamboyant, she seems to be sailing through life as if it were a set of thrills to be enjoyed while the opportunity remains. As someone whose world revolves around fantasy, Sally’s simple-minded “gold digger” mentality is exposed for what it is. She is captivated by the charms and the money lavished on her by Maximilian.
