zenobia

Hawthorne does a superb job characterizing the dynamic character, Zenobia, of the Blithedale Romance. In the novel, Zenobia, plays the role of the mysterious feminist who possesses wealth and beauty and longs for me. Although all eyes are on her, she feels empty and takes up a conniving lover, Hollingsworth, who does nothing, but encourage her to self-destruct. Theirs was a love doomed from the start due to the immediate polarization of their personalities. It was enviable that the strong-willed Zenobia kill herself after Hollingsworth leaves her for a weaker persona. Unable to face reality throughout the novel, Zenobia’s true nature is unfolded by her radical thoughts on life and the narrator, Miles Coverdale, who remains unbiased until the climax. Differentiating the intervals between a flower’s first bud, the blossoming, and its withering last days is to know Zenobia.
