Youth and Drugs

Throughout history, the issues of drugs and drug usage have been present in some form or another. In many societies certain drugs were an accepted part of religious and social ritual. For example, cannabis, in its various forms, has been used by many ancient cultures, with the earliest known evidence of mankind's use of the cannabis hemp plant dated at approximately 10,000 years ago, from a stone-age village on the Asian island of Taiwan. The ancient Greeks, Hebrews, and Chinese all used cannabis as either a medicine, an intoxicating drug, or to manufacture cloth or paper. In India, the origins of cannabis are recorded in the Veda's, India's four most sacred books, written approximately 4,000 years ago. Similarly, the opium was cultivated in the ancient civilisations of Persia, Egypt and Mesopotamia.
