Nathaniel Hawthorne was a very interesting person and author. Hawthorne was born in Salem, Mass and lived from 1804 to 1864. The Romantic Period lasted 60 years (1800-1860). Ironically, Hawthorne lived for 60 years also. Nonetheless, he was a product of the Puritan times. Hawthorne work focused on religious and moral issues. He also used nature in his novels and short stories. A lot of his work is said to have been a reflection of his past or the past of his ancestors. His early ancestor, William Hathorne, came from England to Massachusetts Bay colony with John Winthrop in 1630. William was a magistrate and ordered the public whipping of Quakers. Another ancestor of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s was also noted as one of the three judges in the Salem witch trials. Hawthorne may not have been proud of this, explaining him adding the letter “w” to Hawthorne while in college. One of his works that reflects his past is the short story “Young Goodman Brown.” ...
