Young Goodman Brown

In reading “Young Goodman Brown” I thought to myself. What approach can I take in analyzing this literature? I thought, maybe I can take the psychological approach and use Freud’s theory of the mind to better understand the literature. I think the story is all about the three part psyche of the mind. The id (unconscious), ego (conscious), and the super-ego (conscience).In the beginning of the story, Brown’s id wins a battle over the ego and super-ego when Brown leaves his wife Faith to go on his journey. Brown wants to fulfill his inner desire no matter what, and therefore goes into the dark forest to meet the devil (sin). The id wants to explore the unknown. Brown is being driven by his id to meet the devil. When Brown meets the devil he is surprised to find out that he resembles the devil which to me means that Brown sees himself as being sinful. Brown comes across an old woman who was his spiritual advisor. She...
