You Are Dead

In 1984, George Orwell envisions a society where the people are hideously oppressed, privacy is violated, and no thoughts escaped the government’s watchful eyes. Mr. Charrington, a member of the Thought Police, puts on the façade in order to catch citizens who commit thought-crime. His disguise was a gentle old man who had lost his wife a long time ago and manages a living by running his own shop. Mr. Charrington successfully deceived Winston into believing he was another person who shared interest in the times before the Party, and thus he caught Winston for the Party by deception. Initially, Mr. Charrington seems to be an individual who could aid Winston in recalling the past, but he is revealed to be someone who obliterates Winston’s hopes for rebellion.
