Yellow Prison
The story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is fascinating. A woman, who is the main character and narrator, tells the story. At the beginning of the story, she appears to be a sick or slightly depressed woman, who is being treated for this condition with bed rest and isolation, or the rest cure. Her husband John, a well-respected physician, tends lovingly to her well-being. As the story continues, the character begins to sink into a deeper depression as well as a bizarre sense of reality. The top floor nursery John has chosen for her to stay in, with the unsightly wallpaper, seems to assist in propelling her to a state of insanity.
When first reading the story, the narrator appears to be of normal sanity. Although she is somewhat irritated at the insistence by her husband and her brother, who is also a respected physician, that she remain on the rest cure and refrain from working (590).
