A Loss of Innocence

One’s childhood, the sweet memories of their past, is something we all take for granted. Imagine being forced to grow up at such a young age, you have no recollection of the “good old days.” The two protagonists, Elie of Night and Sookan of Year of Impossible Goodbyes, were put into such extreme malignancy; it transformed their innocent hearts into spiteful ones. The atrocity and hardships that Elie and Sookan faced as young children deprived them of their childhood causing them to lose their innocence.
Young children depend on their families for support and love. Since Sookan’s father and brothers were away at war, she lacked the parental guidance and support that is essential in a young girl’s life. She was forced not only to look after herself, but tend to her younger brothers needs as well, which seemed to dwindle away her childhood.
