Wuthering Heights

In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, Nelly Dean serves as a confidante to Catherine Earnshaw, Isabella, and Catherine’s daughter Cathy.
One of the most crucial events in the novel occurs in chapter 9 with Nelly, Catherine, and Heathcliff. In the kitchen of Wuthering Heights, Catherine tells Nelly that Edgar proposed to her and that she accepted it. She then tells Nelly that it would “degrade me to marry Heathcliff,” not knowing that Heathcliff was in the room to hear it.
