It was the summer of 1996. As a member of the Resident’s Welfare Association of our colony, I realized that the growing problem of cleanliness could lead to an epidemic. The insensitivity of the local municipal authorities prompted me to take the initiative and start a cleanliness drive.

About 30 people volunteered. I analysed the specific skills of each volunteer so that I could assign them appropriate roles. The volunteers had diversified levels of skills and experience. Some had prior experience in fund raising and community service activities, while others had the required skills and zest to contribute. Despite the differing levels of experience, all volunteers shared a common goal – to make the cleanliness drive a success.
