The World War One effects on Russia’s society and economy played a big part in causing the revolution of 1917. The break down of the economy from the effects of the war became apparent. The first months of the war had already shown that the Russian economy was not capable of satisfying the demands placed on it by the war. Arms and ammunition were desperately needed, and industry could not make good the losses. Businesses closed down, one after the other. In 1915 alone, 573 factories and mills stopped work. Production began to drop in the most important branches of the economy. The country began to experience a fuel crisis, and a large proportion of the country's industrial plants came to a stop through lack of fuel.
