Workplace stress and the Individual

“Stress is the tension you feel when there are more demands than you can handle…Stress is like an out-of-balance scale - the pressures on one side of the scale outweigh the coping resources on the other” {Smith & Pergola, 2003}

Stress does not have to be bad. Below are the levels of stress and the consequences of each level.
Eustress - positive or good stress, this is healthy stress that can energise an individual for example an athlete in a competition. {Smith & Pergola, 2003}
There are two forms of negative stress:
Acute stress - is intense, this type of stress disappears after the event is over, i.e. being “pulled over by a police officer for a traffic violation. Your heart races, you sweat, your breathing gets faster.” {Smith & Pergola, 2003}
