Nancy Astor

Nancy Astor exploited both social change and personal circumstances to pioneer female representation in the English parliament. She was not born an English citizen but married into a English wealth and title. This occurred during the Edwardian period before the upheaval of World War 1. Nancy Astor rode the wave of change that followed.

Nancy Astor was born in Danville, Virginia on the 19th May 1879. She grew up in a wealthy home, were her father made a fortune in Railway development. In 1897 she married a man called Robert Gould Shaw, their marriage ended in 1903. A year later she moved to England were she met and married Waldorf Astor.
