WOmen studies

Female Genital Mutilation, or FGM, is something that I can only begin to fathom. The pain and torment these girls must have had to go through is unimaginable. But, I also live in a, somewhat, patriarchal society. So, to some point, I can understand why FGM is so deeply entrenched into the society. I feel that I am extremely lucky to be living in Canada and I would like to do something for other women around the world who have not been as lucky as I have. Why does FGM occur and how can it be stopped? Through reading the articles and watching the video, I have gained insight into the world of FGM.
According to the reading “Sexual Surgery in Nineteenth Century America” by Ben Barker-Benfield, a women’s independence was thought of as a sickness or a disease. Sexually surgeries were done in attempt to “cure” women of an illness. Often, the only “illness” that was truly present was a women’s need for sexual freedom; something men felt a need to control.
