Society has deemed necessary to classify a person’s individualism based on race, class, sex, and age alone. When in fact these things alone only touch on thing we can see, it says nothing about the person as a whole. For example, is a black woman only seen as being black? What if is she has children, is a lesbian, or prefer to date outside of her race? What category would she fall into then? In the article “Age, Race, Sex, and Class” by Audre Lorde, she discusses how she feels society has created a box and within this box you have limitations, which are said to be normal and accepted by society. However, Lorde doesn’t want to be described as just being a black woman. She explains how you have a right to be who you want to be and there is no one box. In addition, she said that people make choices not to be ostracized but rather a way of expressing and defining who they are.
