It has been a misconception that women in the Muslim religion have been neglected and mistreated for many centuries. This however is not true, women have played a key role and have been very instrumental in the development of the Islamic religion. Islam has served as a unifying link between disparate ethnic elements and cultural traditions. There are a variety of opinions that focus on this type of reasoning towards women, one is from Umar, the second Caliph, who frequently quoted: “Take refuge in God from the evils caused by women, and beware of the most pious of them! … that the prosperity and population of the world may depend on women but that “it is a fact that all the trials, misfortunes and woes which befall men come from women.” This statement indicates that even though women were acknowledged, their presence was a curse put upon men.
