With close references to the first two scenes show how Tennessee Williams shows different aspects of Blanche’s character and situation.

The first way Tennessee Williams reveals a part of Blanche’s character is by commenting on her appearance. Her “white suit with a fluffy bodice” strikes you as out of place in the old south with it’s dishevelled, “weathered grey” buildings and “atmosphere of decay”. It immediately signifies that this woman is different, set apart from the “roughly dressed” characters and removed from the “bananas and coffee” atmosphere and the “spirit of the blue piano”. Her appearance, which is “incongruous to this setting” shows her awkwardness towards her surroundings and Williams uses this to set up the ‘fish out of water' motif that is carried on throughout the play.
Similarly, her “shocked disbelief” at where she finds herself is used to illustrate a larger aspect of her character, which is reflected in her general manner and the way she conducts herself, one of superiority and dismissal.
