When reading both William Faulkner’s “The Bear” and Ernest Hemingway’s “An African Betrayal” you find that they are both stories that make the same points using the same ideas in different ways. These are both stories, which dealt with the journey from boyhood to manhood through the use of a hunt. A hunt, the most basic and primal expression of masculinity, that fact could have been no accident. Yet, both of these stories end in completely different ways, evoking very different feelings for the reader. In each of these stories the main characters outlook on mans relationship with nature is slowly formed thought out the course of the story and is the main theme. In each of these stories the events that happen instill these values courage, honor, pride, justice and liberty. Faulkner states these in the end of his story “The Bear” when the father shares a moment with his son.
