Wilderness also signifies challenge: The challenge of humans existing in the harshness of our natural environment. It touches and shapes our sense of beauty and inspires awesome reverence for its being. And it can evoke a spiritual joy that we experience as true freedom. Wilderness is both a metaphor for freedom and a physical place to be in touch with the spiritual nature..
