Why would an author use allegory to write a novel?


By definition, allegory is the representation of the main theme of a story with the use of symbols and symbolism. A good example of the use of allegory is Lord of Flies. In this book William Golding uses symbolism to represent many things, including the main theme of the story, which it is believed is the Nazi concentration camps that had been revealed when the book was written.

Authors use allegory in stories for many reasons. It can be used to get across any political idea that Golding has or to try and tell a topic that at first glance would not seem as interesting, but with allegory can seem a whole lot more interesting. In summary, allegory can be a useful device for representing themes in a story that cannot be portrayed truly.
