In the essay, “ Why Women Are Paid Less Then Men,” Lester C Thurow argues that women do not get paid as much as men. First, Thurow takes us back 40 years ago where white women made 60 percent less than men. In that same time period, it was evident that minorities were catching up with whites. The shocking thing was that minority women were making more progress than minority men. Thurow uses statistics as his argument strategy to try to prove his point. The purpose of this was that he was trying to establish credibility. However, Thurow does not say the sources of his statistics. In the first paragraph, Thurow ask the question “Why?”. Why are these women being paid less than men? This question tells us what the whole essay is going to be about. By the author asking the question, this gives him the opportunity to introduce his evidence.
