Why Are We More Insightful About Some Things Over Others?

Critics love to write about the things they hate. It gives them the chance to show their

own good taste, by putting down the taste of everyone around them. Meanwhile, the public can

not get enough of negative reviews. We do not care to read what is so great about the Moscow

Ballet; we would much rather hear how Eminem is a public nuisance, how the baseball

commissioners are unpatriotic, or how Adam Sandler is about as funny as a paper cut. Yet,

despite the popularity of hostile criticism, it is not clear that someone can be a good judge of

something simply because he or she dislikes it. In fact, people are much more insightful about the

things they do like than about the things they do not.

When someone is presented with something that they find to be interesting, then they

attempt to learn everything there is to know about that particular thing. But they lack a broader
