It gives them the chance to show their own good taste, by putting down the taste of everyone around them. Meanwhile, the public can not get enough of negative reviews. We do not care to read what is so great about the Moscow Ballet; we would much rather hear how Eminem is a public nuisance, how the baseball commissioners are unpatriotic, or how Adam Sandler is about as funny as a paper cut. Yet, despite the popularity of hostile criticism, it is not clear that someone can be a good judge of something simply because he or she dislikes it. In fact, people are much more insightful about the things they do like than about the things they do not.
