When I write a paper with guidelines for structure, style, and topic, I’m writing a paper for someone else. I refer to most assignments as writing for the man. To actually compose a piece of writing is creating a child, a piece of me that I raise and care for until I’m ready to show it to the world. I do not write. I compose and give birth and life to my words and feelings so they may affect others as they affect me. Writing for the man requires prewriting, notes, graphic organizers, rough drafts, and revisions. I find myself searching for a beginning and not knowing where to start.
