Why do young people smoke?

You may have noticed that in our society many young people have either tried or taken up smoking. This is a great concern to everybody. Many teenagers often start smoking because they think it is glamorous and grown up and don’t think they’ll be smoking for life. But what many don’t realise is that, tobacco acts in the same way as cocaine as it is addictive. There are many health risks and problems involved in smoking.

Smoking causes a wide range of respiratory and non-respiratory effects. Many of these develop over time while others begin as soon as a person picks up a cigarette.

Many children’s attitudes and behaviour regarding tobacco are influenced by advertising. Advertising also leads teens to believe that smoking is more common than it actually is.
