Why Do I Want to be a Teacher?


I have always wanted to be a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers and in my mother’s case at 80 years old, she is still teaching by running a pre- kindergarten school. My parents loved their careers and passed their passion on to me.

Life is always about choices and when I finished my undergraduate work in 1977, I was at the proverbial fork in the road. Do I keep going in school or get to work? I chose to go to work and began a long and successful career in business. Throughout the years I continuously thought about teaching and wondered if I had made a mistake. This feeling grew steadily in the past two decades as I raised my kids and interacted with the education system. I was envious of the teachers that “were on fire” and those teachers of whom my kids would say, “ I love Mr. or Ms…”. When asked the que...
