Why did eric smith kill?

Synopsis-
Eric Smith, a thirteen-year-old boy brutally murdered an innocent five-year-old boy named Derrick Robie. Derrick was heading to the park one day and Eric told the young boy he knew a short cut. Eric guided Derrick into the woods; their Eric choked and beat Derrick to death with a large rock, he then proceeded to sexually abuse Derrick’s lifeless body! Eric Smith eventually confessed to the murder, was tried as an adult, and sentenced to nine years in prison.
Why did Eric kill?
That is a question we will probably never know the answer to. Actually, the only person who might know would be Eric himself, however, I’m not sure if even he really knows. I’m not sure why Eric thought killing another person was the answer to his problems, but I think I know why he chose Derrick Roby.
