Which of the characters do you feel was most responsible for the death of Eva Smith?

COURSE WORK: J. B. Priestly; An Inspector Calls

Which of the characters do you feel was most responsible for the death of Eva Smith? In Act Three of the play An Inspector Calls, the Inspector tells the Birling family, “This girl killed herself - and died a horrible death. But each of you helped to kill her. Remember that. Never forget it”.

The aim of this essay is to try and determine whom I believe to be most responsible for the death of Eva Smith, or Daisy Renton. To do this I will examine each character in turn and assess each character’s responsibility for the death of Eva Smith. I have gathered my information and conclusions/ ideas, from a copy of the play, and notes taken from Stephen Daldrey’s production in the West End.

The story begins with the mysterious Inspector Goole calling unexpectedly on the prosperous Birling family. His startling revelations not only shatter the very foundations of their lives but challenge us all to examine our consciences.
