Where are you going? Where have you been?

This emotional and psychological story of a young teenage girl, Connie, is a depiction of how one's life of pure innocents crosses over to a life crime and guilt. The author, Joyce Oates gives the reader a central idea of each character that is a part of Connie's life and of the characters that forced their way into her life.
Where are you going? Oates may have asked this question to show the reader that no one really knows what lye's ahead of him or her in the future. "Where? Where're we going?" Connie asks Friend. Oates shows Connie clueless and wondering what Arnold Friend has in store for her.
